It is unknown how early he obtained this, but it can be seen in shots from The Bends-era and earlier. However, he started using the DD-200 on more songs. He continued to use his RE-20 for other tracks at the same shows.įor The Smile’s Jun 2022 tour of Europe, Jonny continued to use both a DD-200 and a RE-20. The pedal could be heard on Thin Thing and Just Eyes and Mouth. When The Smile played three shows at London’s Magazine on January 29-30, Jonny used the DD-200 on a crisp digital setting. Jonny first used a DD-200 on January 26, 2022, in an Instagram-streamed The Smile rehearsal. One of Jonny’s Akai Headrush E2 pedals in 2014. In this screenshot, Jonny can be seen tapping his Akai Headrush E1 during Bangers and Mash. Outside of Radiohead, Jonny used an Akai Headrush E2 for all 2014 performances of his solo pieces Loop and Skip Loop, and also for his 2014 collaborative performance with Shye Ben-Tzur of Ben-Tzur’s Dil Ki Bahar. Jonny brought a Headrush E2 with him to India for the recording of Junun, but it doesn’t seem to have made it onto the album. The volume of the Headrush is probably set somewhere around 12 o’clock, since the loop is much quieter than the new riff. Jonny records and plays back a loop of the main riff in an identical manner again after the brief break section (1:42-2:00). The double taps visible at 1:22, 1:29, 1:35 are when he quickly stops and restarts the loop to ensure that it’s in sync for the next two measures. If you watch the From The Basement performance from 1:20-1:42, you can see him repeatedly lift his right foot to hit the footswitches on the Headrush (it’s on a riser near at back of his board). He records the loop on last repeat of that section (when as Thom sings “did your string come undone”) He stops recording and starts playback of the loop on the downbeat of the next section (when Thom sings “one by one”), and restarts the loop every two measures, which playing a new riff over it. On 15 Step, Jonny uses his Akai Headrush to capture a loop of his main riff (the one which he starts to play after Thom sings “then you cut the string”). The studio recording of Bangers and Mash was made with tape loops, so using a looper for performances does match the spirit of the original. It doesn’t feature on the recordings of those, except perhaps on 15 Step. However, Jonny experimented with the effect quite a bit during the recording of In Rainbows, and began using it for looping on performances of 15 Step, Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, and Bangers and Mash.
For Radiohead 2016, 2017, and 2018 tours, he only used a Headrush E2 with his guitar, and only used a Headrush E1 with his Ondomo (ondes Martenot).Īt first, the Headrush on Jonny’s guitar pedalboard wasn’t used for guitar at all – instead, it was only used to loop his radio during performance of The National Anthem and to loop Thom’s voice during performances of Everything In Its Right Place. During Radiohead’s 2012 tour, Jonny frequently switched between the two models with no apparent reason, similar to how he frequently switched between different volume pedals.
Jonny first 2010 used an E2 for Radiohead’s Haiti Benefit show in 2010. Perhaps he prefers that the E1 can be kept in looper mode using the slide switch – it’s easier to accidentally switch modes with the E2. Unlike Ed, who switched from an E1 to an E2 in 2006, Jonny has stuck with his Headrush E1 for much longer.
Although the Headrush can be used as a delay, Jonny has only publicly used it as a looper, prefering his Roland RE-201 or his Bos RE-20 for delay sounds. Jonny added an Akai Headrush E1 to his guitar pedalboard in 2002 or 2003, though he started using one with his ondes Martenot in 2000.
